OUR EP “THE BORDER SESSIONS” IS AVAILABLE ON BANDCAMP!!!
LANDS END are a group of young talented musicians who originally formed for a one off show four years ago and today are widely regarded as among the finest bluegrass musicians in both Ireland and the UK.
Fronted by Galway troubadour Hubert Murray, his soulful voice is instantly recognizable and full of raw energy, as are his fiery bluegrass flatpicking solos. Initially raised on the music of Rory Gallagher and Jimi Hendrix, he was later drawn to bluegrass via an exploration of the old-time blues roots of both bluegrass and classic rock.
Richie Foley (mandolin) and Paddy Kiernan (banjo) are two of the most recognisable faces on the Irish bluegrass scene who can also be seen playing with the ‘Godfather of Irish Bluegrass’, Niall Toner. Richie is a seasoned Irish traditional musician and Paddy was the first 5 string banjo player to graduate from the MA in Irish Traditional Music programme at the University of Limerick in 2015. Their combined sound contributes the distinctively Irish element of the band’s sound.
Bruno Pichler (dobro), Sam Rose (Double Bass) and Hubert form part of London’s Old Time/Bluegrass super group The Hot Rock Pilgrims who have been generating huge momentum over the past two years playing to audiences at venues ranging from intimate folk clubs to prestigious locations such as The Royal Festival Hall (London), Fire on the Mountain, Wilderness and Isle of Wight Festivals.
Holding down the dobro chair in the band is the Bavarian Bear Bruno Pichler. With his leather hat and a massive beard, Bruno can win over a crowd by visual appeal alone. However Bruno has been a student of the resophonic guitar for many years, taking lessons from his musical heroes including Sally Van Meter, Rob Ickes, Michael Witcher, Andy Hall, Billy Cardine, Ivan Rosenberg and he was recently placed 2nd in the prestigious Rockygrass Dobro Contest in Colorado.
The youngest member of the band, Sam Rose was raised in Britain’s Bluegrass capital Helsby. His exuberant bass style provides the driving foundation of the band. He recently graduated with first-class honours in Guitar Performance (BMus) from The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in London, and is in high demand as a session musician and teacher. He also regularly performs with London electric rock outfit The Yacht Club.
Together these 5 musicians create a truly unique sound which ranges from driving bluegrass standards, through modern arrangements of Irish music, old blues standards and blistering old time medleys. The band’s debut EP ‘The Border Sessions’, showcases these multifarious influences with original songs contributed by Hubert Murray, an Irish/blues treatment of Rory Gallagher’s classic ‘Out on the Western Plain’, classic bluegrass murder ballad ‘Wild Bill Jones’ and a showcase of the band’s instrumental prowess on the John Reischman tune ‘Salt Spring’.
